Choosing a business name

Choosing a business name is one of the first crucial decisions you have to make when creating a new business.

You want a name that is memorable, easy to communicate and reflects the promise you make to your customers.

Here are a few things to think about when choosing a name:

Can you get the domain name?

The hardest domain to get is a .com. A dot com is the simplest to register online so long as the name is available. Sometimes you may want to make up a word by changing the spelling slightly. That’s what we did when we choose kloudspeed.com.

Can it be communicated verbally easily?

Imagine your business in a radio advertisement. Can you quickly communicate the name to listeners so they can easily remember it and type it into a browser? For us we would have to say something like: “cloud speed dot com with a ‘k'”

Can you protect the name?

Here is where you need good legal advice on how you can protect your business name. You can look at business names, also called doing business as names in some jurisdictions and trademarks. Trademarks can protect your business name and its logo.
